To sharpen understanding of population trends over the period since 1950 the present volume includes over 800 charts that summarize data from the 152 countries that had populations exceeding 300000 in 1985 and for 30 United Nations regions. The data on variables such as time of births deaths age distributions and urbanization are presented in 5-year intervals from 1950-2020. In recognition that projections are uncertain the United National medium projections were used in the population estimates. The major portion of this volume is comprised of detailed country tabulations on 60 population units in 1970-1987. For purposes of comparison among countries and points of time a Summary Table is also included that presents the most frequently used demographic indicators dating back to 1950. Specifically the summary table contains data on population size and density population age structure vital rates in the form of crude and age-sex standardized birth and death and intrinsic female birth death and growth rates and on mortality and fertility. In the more detailed country reports charts graphically present the countrys age distribution in the 1950- 2020 period the 1985 age structure by sex mortality and fertility trends from 1950-2020 and past and future trends of population aging. The graph on fertility and mortality trends provides readers with an immediate visual impression of the status of the demographic transition in a given population.
