The Metamorphosis. Contribution to the study of transformability in the Trumai thought (High Xingâ, Brazil). In this article, the conceptions of the Trumai indians about person and metamorphosis are described and analysed through their mythology, in contrast with a) the way they categorize living entities, b) different types of transformation. The ethnographic observation of rituals enables to establish rhetoric relations which link them metaphorically with metamorphosis. This hypothesis is confronted with practices that Trumai observe to come close to the spirits, especially the musical performances whose nature and aim are investigated. The conceptual organization of music and songs among the Trumai can be enlarged to many groups (the so-called «marginal-tropical forest tribes») on account of their shared conceptions of time and oral tradition.
