Despite recognition of the purposeful character of Gregory’s Histories , current scholarship still largely endorses the traditional idea of synchronic or graduated composition of the Histories, reaching back to the beginning of Chilperic’s control of Tours. But the evidence for this hypothesis can be shown to be unconvincing, and compelling arguments also can be adduced for placing composition of even the early books of contemporary history in the period after 585, when Childebert II took control of Tours. This perspective on the Histories has important implications for how we understand Gregory’s relationship to contemporary rulers of Gaul and the political events of his episcopacy.
