GUT MEMBRANE, PARCHMENT AND GELATINE INCORPORATED INTO TEXTILE OBJECTS

Abstract

Summary This article describes some textile objects where gut membrane, parchment or gelatine have been used either in the structure or as part of an applied embellishment. It indicates how these materials were used in textiles at various dates, and describes and discusses the treatments either undertaken to these objects or proposed for them. The article draws attention to and illustrates some of the problems the conservator faces when these materials are incorporated into textiles.
