An Intergenerational Approach to Internet Training: Student-Led Outreach to Promote Seniors' Use of Internet Health Resources

Abstract

This presents a collaborative project to improve access to and use of health information by seniors. The project assessed the feasibility of using university students in a train-the-trainer model to mentor older adults in using the Internet regarding health and health care options. A year-long initiative presented a series of workshops and individual consultations at partner sites to reinforce basic computer skills, teach effective navigation of the Internet, enhance searching capabilities, and promote use of high quality health Web sites. Outreach training was complemented by the creation of a Web site addressing the unique needs of local seniors.
