This article examines the impact of the global economy on Western-style democratic welfare states and on the profession of social work. The effects of the global economy include a general economic reorganisation, which stresses productivity and efficiency. Welfare programmes have not been exempt from this emphasis and are being reevaluated in light of their cost effectiveness. This reexamination is also leading to new forms of funding and service delivery, including Quangos, NGOs, and privatisation. This article will examine how these trends affect social services, including the sweeping technological changes occurring in human services. Also examined is the increase in the requisite knowledge required of social workers to cope with the effects of the global marketplace on social services.
