The present study was concerned with the interaction between 12-week-old infants and their caretakers, usually their mothers. Social class was observed in order to determine possible differences and consequences in terms of the development of the child. Striking differences in mother-infant interaction as a function of social class were found, which suggest important processes between this dyad. In general, middle SES mothers do not do more for their infants than lower SES mothers; rather, there is a different style of responding.
