The Effect of Sodium and Calcium Ions in the Deacidification of Paper: A Chemo-Physical Study Using Thermal Analysis

Abstract

SUMMARIES Due to the key role played by acidity in the degradation of paper objects, its neutralization is one of the processes most frequently applied in conservation. In addition, a solid deposit, an “alkaline reserve” inside the paper as protection against future acidity should be provided, and of course the deacidifying agent must not have any harmful side effects, in either the short or in the long term. The most common deacidifying agents in aqueous solution are calcium bicarbonate, calcium hydroxide and borax (sodium tetraborate). The latter is easy to used, provides a sufficient alkaline reserve and also functions as a mild fungicide. There are, however, some doubts regarding negative side effects; some researchers have reported a sharp decrease in DP of the cellulose and a yellowing of the paper after moist heat accelerated ageing. The sodium ion would be responsible for these effects. Calcium compounds, however, are generally accepted as deacidification agents. The purpose of the study reported here was to compare the effects of sodium and of calcium ions on paper. Pure cotton cellulose treated with aqueous solutions of sodium tetraborate and calcium tetraborate at the same level of concentration were subjected to accelerated ageing at standardized thermohygrometric conditions and examined by means of thermogravimetric analysis and other specific chemical and physical measurements. These were pH, alkaline reserve, ash content, whiteness and DP. As a result, the theory presented is that it is not the sodium ions which have a negative effect, but the salt formed with tetraborate ions. En raison du rôle primordial joué par l'acidité dans la dégradation des objets en papier sa neutralisation est l'un des processus les plus fréquemment utilisés dans la conservation du papier. En plus de la désacidification actuelle ce processus devrait fournir une matière solide, une « réserve alcaline » à l'intérieur du papier afin d'assurer une protection contre une acidité future, et évidemment cet agent désacidifiant ne devrait engendrer aucun effet secondaire néfaste pas plus à court qu'à long terme. Les agents désacidifiants les plus communément utilisés en solution aqueuse sont le bicarbonate de calcium, l'hydroxyde de calcium et le borax (tétraborate de sodium). Cette dernière substance est d'un emploi facile, elle fournit une réserve alcaline suffisante et a de surcroît un effet fongicide. Il existe cependant des doutes à propos de certains effets secondaires négatifs; quelques chercheurs ont observé une réduction importante du DP (Diametral Pitch) de la cellulose ainsi qu'un jaunissement du papier après le vieillissement artificiel thermique humide; selon eux l'ion de sodium serait l'agent responsable de ces effets. Par contre les solutions contenant du calcium sont en général bien acceptées comme agents désacidifiants. L'objet de cette étude consistait à comparer les effets des ions de sodium et de calcium sur le papier. Des échantilons de cellulose pure de coton traités en solutions aqueuses de tétraborate de sodium et de tétraborate de calcium à un même degré de concentration ont été soumis à un vieillissement accéléré dans des conditions thermohygrométriques standardisées et examinés au moyen de l'analyse thermogravimétrique et d'autres mesures chimiques et physiques spécifiques: pH, réserve alcaline, teneur en cendre, degré de blancheur, DP. En conclusion de cette recherche on propose une thèse selon laquelle ce ne sont pas les ions sodium qui ont un effet négatif mais le sel formé par les ions de tétraborate. Wegen der Bedeutung des Säuregehaltes von Papier für seinen Abbau ist eine Entsäuerung die wohl am häufigsten angewandte einschlägige Konservierungsmaßnahme. Neben der aktuellen Entsäuerung soll sie zum Schutz gegen künftig in das Papier gelangende Säure eine alkalische Reserve als Feststoff schaffen, und selbstverständlich soll sie weder kurz- noch langfristig irgendwelche negativen Nebenwirkngen haben. Die am häufigsten eingesetzten Entsäuerungsmittel für die wäßrige Behandlung sind Calciumbicarbonat, Calciumhydroxid und Borax (Natriumtetraborat). Letztere Substanz ist einfach im Gebrauch, schafft eine ausreichende alkalische Reserve und hat zudem eine fungicide Wirkung. In der Literatur wird aber von deutlichem Rückgang des DP der Cellulose und einer Vergilbung des behandelten Papiers nach beschleunigter Feuchtalterung berichtet; Verursacher sei das Natriumion. Calciumverbindungen sind dagegen allgemein als Entsäuerungsmittel akzeptiert. Das Anliegen der hier vorgelegten Studie war es, die Wirkung der Ionnen von Natrium und Calcium auf Papier zu untersuchen. Reines Baumwollpapier wurde mit wäßrigen Lösungen von Natrium- und Calciumtetraborat in gleicher Konzentration behandelt, einer standardisierten beschleunigten Alterung in feuchter Hítze ausgesetzt und einer thermogravimetrischen Untersuchung sowie anderen chemischen und physikalischen Messungen unterworfen: pH, alkalische Reserve, Aschegehalt, Weißgrad, Polymerisationsgrad. Als Ergebnis wird die These aufgestellt, daß nicht das Natriumion negative Wirkungen hervorrufe, sondern das Salz, das es mit dem Tetraboration bildet.
