Roussel (Louis).- The Family in Western Europe: Differences and Similarities In Western Europe homogeneous from a demographic point a view? In the light of current indicators, the answer must be in the negative. There are in fact, four different combinations of indicators that correspond to four different geographical areas. But there is a strong common pattern to trends in these countries and this raises the question whether it is merely a matter of time before differences disappear. Changes that were first observed in the North, later become diffused into the South. As was the case with the population transition, developments in countries that are the last to be affected also tend to be more rapid. It is, therefore, to be expected that the differences that at present exist will become less marked in the future.
