Hildegard of Bingen, 1098-1179: A Visionary Life.

Abstract

Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), visionary, mystic, poet, musician, naturalist, healer and theologian, was one of the most remarkable women of the Middle Ages. Now available in paperback, Sabina Flanagan's fascinating study of Hildegard's life and work, places her writings in the context of medieval life and thought, and shows how, in an age when few women wrote more than an occasional letter, Hildegard's writings not only surpassed those of most of her male contemporaries in the range of their subject matter, but also outshone them in visionary beauty and intellectual power.
