Many paradoxes are involved in the ideas of ‘small'‐ or ‘large'‐linguistic societies, and the concept is often a relative one. Many examples are available from recent news reports, as well as from the literature on sociolinguistics. Furthermore, hundreds of linguistic societies still exist, in all parts of the world, which are small to the vanishing point: for instance, recent years have seen the deaths of the last living speakers of several native Californian languages. The nature of small‐linguistic societies, the directions in which they may change, and the types of language planning appropriate for them are all subject to many intersecting sociolinguistic parameters, including attitudes of speakers in both smaller‐and larger‐linguistic communities.
