Persistent conflict between small‐farmer migrants and the owners of large estates has characterized frontier expansion in the Brazilian Amazon region. These two groups respond to distinct government policy initiatives and hold antagonistic ideological perspectives regarding the appropriation, use, and function of land. To address land conflicts, government intervention has taken on an increasingly political and ideological cast. The evolution and polarization of ideological perspectives, and their relation to distinct material and political positions in land conflicts, are examined. It is argued that the dispute over access to land on the Amazon frontier is an expression of fundamental contradictions in Brazilian state and society.
