Abstract

This article attempts to lay the foundation for a socioiinguistic profile of Madagascar. After giving a brief historical overview of the main language planning events in the country, the socioiinguistic research on Madagascar is reviewed. A brief overview of the linguistic variety of Madagascar is given and the issue of diversity versus unity is highlighted.
