Papyrus Strassburg Inv. Nr. 1404, a text of the late sixth century A.D. first published by Preisigke in 1906, is reconsidered as a source of information on the trade in African slaves in Egypt. Its legal and economic contexts are examined with special reference to the structure of that trade and the possible role of the Sudanese states of Alodia and Makuria in it. The Greek text is reproduced and furnished with an English translation.
