Graduation of Fertility Schedules: An Analysis of Fertility Patterns in London in the 1980s and an Application to Fertility Forecasts

The plot of age-specific fertility rates for a local or regional population is typically so ragged that smoothing of the curve is necessary before analysis and forecasting. The fitting of a parametric function to fertility in the London boroughs is described, together with an application at the Greater London level to fertility forecasting. There are wide contrasts between boroughs in the level of fertility (the total fertility rate) and in the timing of fertility over the reproductive span, as revealed by the most common and average ages of birth and by the extent of dispersion around the average. These differences are shown to be related to the social and ethnic composition of boroughs, and to different levels of female work participation. Over time there is evidence that cyclical fluctuations rather than secular trends are dominant. These fluctuations form the basis for forecasts of model fertility schedules for London using: (1) methods of the autoregressive-moving average type applied to time series of the fertility parameters in London since 1952; and (2) structural time series models which incorporate regression variables as well as the influence of cycle and/or trend. In particular, relative cohort size and female job opportunities are found to influence fertility changes over time. CONGDON P. On montre que de tels écarts s'expliquent par la composition sociale ou ethnique des arrondissements et par divers taux d'activité féminine. Ces fluctuations constituent la base des prévisions des calendriers de fécondité type pour Londres à partir des (1) méthodes d'autorégression/moyennes mobiles appliquées aux séries temporelles des paramètres de fécondité à Londres depuis 1952, et (2) des modèles structurels en série temporelle qui comportent des variables de régression aussi bien que l'influence cyclique et/ou tendancielle. Zwischen Gemeindebezirken bestehen starke Kontraste in der Höhe der Fruchtbarkeit (die Gesamtfruchtbarkeitsrate) und in der zeitlichen Verteilung der Fruchtbarkeit über die Reproduktionszeit, wie die häufigsten und Durchschnittsalter der Geburten und das Ausmass der Streuung um den Durchschnitt herum aufzeigen. Es wird gezeigt, dass die Underschiede in Bezug zur sozialen und ethnischen Zusammensetzung der Bezirke stehen sowie zum unterschiedlichen Umfang der Erwerbstätigkeit von Frauen. Über einen längeren Zeitraum gesehen erweisen sich eher zyklische Schwankungen als säkulare Tendenzen also dominant. Diese Schwankungen bilden die Grundlage für Vorhersagen von Modellen für Fruchtbarkeitstabellen für London, wobei (1) Methoden des autoregressiv beweglichen Durchschnittstyps benutzt werden, welche auf Zeitserien der Fruchtbarkeitsparameter, die in London seit 1952 auftraten, angewandt werden, und (2) strukturelle Zeitserienmodelle, die Regressionsveränderliche sowie den Einfluss von Zyklen und/oder Tendenzen einbeziehen. Es erwies sich, dass Wandel der Fruchtbarkeit über einen lägeren Zeitraum hinweg besonders von der relative Grösse der Kohorten und Gelegenheiten der Frauen zur Erwerbstätigkeit beeinflusst werden.
