Summary Ragnar Øygard, ‘Structural Adjustment Policies and Land Degradation in Tanzania’, Forum for Development Studies, 1997:1, pp. 75–93. The problem of land degradation is discussed for the Tanzanian case, especially how the rate of degradation is affected by changes in economic policy. Possible impacts of economy-wide adjustment policies on land degradation are assessed and found to be small—primarily because the adjustment policies have so far not induced dramatic changes in agricultural production due to numerous infrastructural and institutional constraints. To reduce soil erosion and soil mining effects of agriculture it is crucial to stimulate productivity increase. This should be supplemented with specific policies aimed at reducing problems such as excessive offtake of open access resources, or emissions of hazardous pesticides.
