This article looks critically at folk songs that a Swazi woman composes as she interacts with the social structures that surround her. Through these songs, she expresses her views, feelings and desires. The folk songs that will be used for the purposes of this discussion are communal songs that are composed and performed orally by any member of Swazi society. The songs are on social themes, such as cultural values, death, history and politics, as well as the woman's understanding of the workings of the Swazi economy. These songs provide one amongst several potential oral platforms that the Swazi woman can freely utilise to air her views and reflect on the frustrations that she encounters in her multifaceted world.
