No‐one has hitherto analysed the anti‐Chinese riots that took place in Jamaica in 1918. This task is attempted in the following paper. Evidence drawn from newspaper opinion, and Colonial Office records as well as oral testimony taken from those who remembered the disturbances, have allowed the events of that year to be reconstructed. This material, together with additional work on the role of middlemen minorities, the development of the Jamaican economy, and the dynamics of racial violence, help to provide an explanation for the violence that occurred in 1918 and which was to recur in the years that followed down to the Second World War.
