Remote sensing is defined as the acquisition of data using a remotely located sensing device, and the extraction of information from that data. In the simplest context the eye and the brain could be considered as a remote sensing system. Light enters the eye through the lens, which focuses the light on the retina at the back of the eye. At the retina, the light is converted into an electrical signal by the light sensitive rods and cones that is then transmitted to the brain. On receipt of these signals the brain conducts a process of analysis, or signal processing, to extract information from the data, in this case about the world around us. In practice the term remote sensing is restricted to data acquired by man-made sensing devices, such as a camera and to electromagnetic radiation, such as light. The acquisition of photography using a remotely located camera, and then the interpretation of the data to extract information by viewing the photographs, is the simplest form of remote sensing.
