Looking back: A review of four key articles from volume one

Abstract

Looking back 25 years at these key articles from the first volume, what are the major themes that we see, how relevant are they today, and what are the surprises? What did they foresee correctly and how and where did the field evolve differently from what they expected? In re-reading these articles, one cannot help but be struck by a strong sense of “plus ca change, . . . ”. Many of the major concerns seem to be those that have always been with us and likely always will be most obviously:
