Previous research has suggested that a significant source of depression in men is found in conflicts with sex role expectations. These societal expectations are reflected in both men's symptomology and coping mechanisms. A descriptive pilot study was undertaken with five inpatient depressed men using a combination of questionnaires and drawing tasks. Subjects completed the Beck Depression Inventory, Depression Coping Questionnaire, and Bem Sex Role Inventory, as well as four drawings depicting themselves in male roles and two reflecting self-concept. Role drawings were subject-rated on a personal construct grid according to perceived conflict in each role. Support was found for significant sex role conflict being strongly correlated with these subjects' presenting problems at admission for depression. Each man's biographical information and data were analyzed and compared to examine the lives of five individuals in order to gain useful information for working with this population.
