Community action and urban sustainability: Hope for the millennium?

Abstract

The world's cities are beset by environmental and social problems in the wake of powerful forces of globalisation. This paper shows how some local communities are devising means of resistance and strategies for making their cities more sustainable. Their tactics include direct action and campaigns to restrict car access, improve public transport and provide more affordable housing.
