Migrating‐remitting‐‘building’‐dwelling: house‐making as ‘proxy’ presence in postsocialist Albania

Abstract

This article examines the material culture of migration, focusing on migrants' house‐making projects in their countries of birth. In particular, it examines the houses built or refurbished by Albanians in their home‐country, which is no longer their place of permanent residence. This is a widespread phenomenon in Albania, but it is also a frequently appearing practice amongst other international migrants. Why do migrants living outside their home‐countries build houses there even though they do not plan to return? I seek to answer this question in the case of Albania by focusing empirically on the process of constructing these houses, rather than merely on the material entity of the house as such. I propose that such ‘house‐making’ by Albanian migrants is not only a simple house‐building process; it also ensures a constant dwelling and dynamic ‘proxy’ presence for migrants in their community of origin. These ethnographic observations have further significance for the anthropological study of both houses and international migration. Résumé L’auteur examine la culture matérielle de la migration en attachant une attention particulière aux projets de construction de maison des migrants dans leur pays natal. Il examine en particulier les maisons construites ou rénovées par des Albanais dans leur pays natal, qui n’est plus leur lieu de résidence permanente. Ce phénomène, très répandu en Albanie, apparaît également souvent chez d’autres migrants dans le monde. Pourquoi des migrants vivant en dehors de leur pays construisent‐ils des maisons dans celui‐ci alors qu’ils n’ont pas l’intention d’y revenir ? L’auteur cherche à répondre à cette question, dans le cas de l’Albanie, en se concentrant empiriquement sur le processus de construction de ces maisons et non simplement sur l’entité matérielle que constitue la maison. Il suggère que « faire une maison » n’est pas seulement la construction d’une maison pour les migrants albanais : c’est aussi un moyen de s’assurer un lieu de résidence permanent et une présence « par procuration » dynamique dans leur communauté d’origine. Ces observations ethnographiques sont également riches d’enseignement pour l’étude anthropologique des maisons aussi bien que des migrations internationales.
