This study explores the relationship between children's individual characteristics and their experiences in foster care. Drawing on stratification theory, the author develops a causal model to link sixteen variables that are related to children's placements and their length of time in care. The findings indicate the different ways in which the foster care system responds to older children, handicapped children, and children from minority backgrounds.
