This article aims to discuss the topic of migration in a corpus of contemporary Hungarian and Romanian films, with a focus on the spatial dynamics of characters trapped between institutions, places and countries. After a short outline of the historical, cultural and political backgrounds of the two cinemas, I proceed with describing the places these films represent, relying on concepts formulated by Michel Foucault, Marc Augé and Nicolas Bourriaud, among others. With the help of these sociological and cultural approaches adjusting to a fast-changing globalized world, I propose to reveal the issues raised by transnational mobility in societies still torn between East and West, tradition and modernization, a phenomenon reflected in co-productions, filmic heterotopias and a new type of artist: the radicant.
