This paper is a preliminary study of address terms based on a small corpus of \ntalk by members of a New Zealand rugby team collected using ethnographic \nfieldwork. The paper first looks at how address terms are used by different \nCommunities of Practice within the rugby team then goes on to analyse the \nrange of discourse functions of the speech acts that contain the address terms. \nA comparison of the frequency of Māori and Pākehā address terms indicates \nthat in the match day discourse of the rugby club it is Pākehā norms of \naddress that dominate.
