The qualifying adjectives in editorials of politically polarized newspapers in Venezuela are studied. The article is sustained in the theoretical proposal of the Critical Discourse Analysis and the Descriptive Grammar. The research questions are: i) what types of qualifying adjectives are used in editorials of polarized newspapers? ii) What discursive strategies containing qualifying adjectives predominate in the positive self-presentation and negative other presentation? 50 editorials from El Nacional and Vea, published during the "Reafirmazo" are analyzed. The results indicate that (a) 4 types of adjective are used: "human propensity", "dimension", "value" and "physical property"; (b) that seven discursive strategies were identified, namely: "ideological square", "hyperbole", "argument ad hominem", "sarcasm", "the locus of the preferable news vs old", "animal metaphor", and "history like lesson". A classification of adjectives is suggested to characterize the discourse in politically polarized contexts: adjectives for ethos, logos and pathos.
