Although there is consensus about power and control's central role in violent interpersonal relationships, researchers have characterized control as a unidimensional concept. Also, researchers have viewed interpersonal violence as a unitary phenomenon, assuming that all couples experience violence in the same way. Recognizing these gaps, the goal of this essay is to explicate a conceptually and empirically derived typology of violent couples that is grounded in different properties of control and other associated theoretical constructs that, in isolation, have been found to be key to understanding interpersonal violence. Five propositions are posited, articulating the anticipated differences between couple types.
