Abstract

Over the last twenty or more years, the museum profession has incorporated a new term, ‘preventive conservation’ to add to those of ‘conservation’ and ‘restoration’. How this came about and its thoroughgoing implications for the future of the cultural heritage is explained by ICCROM's Gaël de Guichen, one of the most well‐known and respected spokesmen on this question.
