Public Opinion Trends in Japan

Abstract

In order to determine quantitatively change and the persistence of tradition in the Japanese consciousness over the past 30 years, we made a trend analysis using data taken from some 1,500 nationwide surveys. We found that changes in the Japanese way of thinking have been characterized by a strengthening of private-life-first and democratic ten-dences on the one hand, and. on the other hand, by the persistence of nationalism and traditional social norms, although they arc also undergoing changes
