Pressures are mounting for clinical social work to demonstrate the effectiveness of its mental health interventions and to deliver services in a cost-effective manner. Clinical outcome research has shown that a variety of interventions are effective, and the benefits of different kinds of psychotherapy may be comparable. It appears likely that clinical methods will become increasingly problem-oriented in assessment, more active in intervention, more specific in setting treatment goals, briefer in duration, and more amenable to evaluation. A clinical-administrative model is presented, and implications for social work education and research are suggested.
