Virtual Organisation in the Small Business Sector: The Case of Cavendish Management Resources

Abstract

This paper addresses the process of internationalisation of new technology based firms (NTBFs), focusing on the case of firms from small, less advanced economies. NTBFs operating in this type of environment are frequently confronted with problems at the level of supply and demand of technology. Therefore, the need to obtain the technological knowledge and the markets they cannot find locally is the major drive behind their internationalisation efforts. On the basis of empirical research on a group of Portuguese NTBFs, the paper discusses the conditions that led firms to internationalise their activities along the technology and market dimensions and analyses the strategies they adopted. It is concluded that NTBFs have been more effective with respect to technology than to market internationalisation, although both objectives are closely linked in firms' strategies and the results achieved at one level are used to assist the other. The ability to establish a network of supportive relationships that compensates for their insufficiencies with respect to resources and competences, emerges as instrumental to the success of the efforts of NTBFs. Se concluye que las NTBF han sido mas eficientes en cuanto a tecnologia que a internacionalizaci6n de mercados, aunque ambos objetivos estan intimamente ligados en las estrategias de las firmas y los resultados logrados en un nivel son usados para ayudar al otro. The concept of a 'virtual organisation'of a transitory network of individuals coupled together by advanced communications technologies continues to grow in prominence. However, most of the literature concerned with the coupling of networked homeworkers or 'hot-deskers' into virtual teams has centred around the advantages of such arrangements for large organisations. This is a pity, since the competitive benefits of the 'virtual organisation phenomenon' for small businesses may prove just as great as those likely to be reaped by larger concerns. At present, a lack of detailed, real-world cases poses a significant problem when attempting to analyse the business potential of linking remote workers in patterns of virtual organisation. Such a lack of examples is particularly acute within the small business sector. This paper therefore provides a study of a UK-based SME Cavendish Management Resources (CMR) which has for many years exhibited the characteristics of a 'virtual' model of human, technological, and capital resource integration. A literature review concerning virtual organisations is also included as a precis to the case. This paper therefore provides both practical and theoretical insights into new flexible patterns of organisation in the small business sector.
