Preservation surveys of library collections shed light on the current and future physical condition of the collection, and contribute to the formation of preservation policies. This pilot survey examined selected books published between 1980 and 1993 held by the Public Health Library at the University of Michigan. Physical conditions of books published in the United States, England and India were compared. Substantial differences between these countries' books exist, particularly in areas of paper acidity and binding quality. Deacidification, stiffening and rebinding titles upon acquisition may improve the condition of such books and prevent costly preservation action in the future.
