Demand modeling for a newly built transit system is a major issue for the feasibility study. The complexity for such demand modeling stems from the complicated multi-modal trip making by travelers. This paper proposes to build an innovative transit system PRT in the east port area of Rotterdam to improve the efficiency of the existing public transport services and to enhance the accessibility to this part of the port area. This paper presents the principles for the design of the PRT alignment in the studied area. A stated preference (SP) survey is conducted to investigate traveler's response to the new PRT system. This paper develops a methodology and framework specifically for deriving the PRT station-to-station demand matrix considering the multi-modal trips. The results show the potential applicability of PRT as the complement to the existing public transport system and the promising effects of implementing PRT on alleviating congestions on motorways, reducing emissions and fuel consumptions, enhancing the efficiency of existing public transport services, etc.
