A Discussion of Art Therapy as a Science

Abstract

The author examines four factors which may influence some art therapists to reject the scientific method—postmodernism, pseudoscience, antiscience, and gender. She gives an overview of historical developments in science as background for a discussion of each factor. She includes material from the literature in anthropology, psychoanalysis, and alternative health care—fields with similar difficulties in applying scientific rigor—and makes suggestions for training art therapists in scientific principles.
