Little is known about hunter-gatherers in the Shashe-Limpopo confluence area, in contrast to the wellknown farmer sequence. Based on evidence from Tshisiku Shelter, it is apparent that the hunter-gatherer sequence of the confluence area is longer than initially thought, extending back to almost 6 000 BP. Through comparisons of data from Tshisiku and Little Muck Shelters (similar in size, environment and proximity to farmer settlements), it can be concluded that hunter-gatherer–farmer interaction is more complex than previous research suggests, and that different shelters reflect varied hunter-gatherer responses to farmers throughout the contact period.
