The purpose of this study was to determine whether intercultural experiences affect various personality facets. Frequent common sense suggestions are that such experiences lead to a broad and mature outlook on life, to a freedom from narrowly provincial attitudes toward personal, national, and international problems, to better personal adjustment, etc. The Hollins Abroad program, started in January 1955, provided us with an opportunity to attempt to determine objectively the effects of intercultural experiences. A number of informal hypotheses (implied by the psychological measures used) were tested during the first two years of this program. The results are reported here.
