Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Stabilization Methods. Treatments by Deacidification, Trehalose, Phytates on Iron Gall Inks

Abstract

SUMMARIES Samples of pure cellulose paper (Watman no. 1) were submerged in diluted iron gall ink of a “standard” recipe then treated with aqueous solutions of chemicals that are supposed to inhibit ink corrosion: phytate as a chelating agent to block iron ions, trehalose as an antioxidant and calcium bicarbonate as a deacidification agent. Parameters to evaluate the result were degree of polymerisation and pH. It was found that the combination of chelating agent and/or antioxidant was most effective, while deacidification and antioxidant alone did not give sufficient results. Generally, it is stated that the great variety of iron gall ink recipes and the even greater degree of ink corrosion to be found in historic manuscripts make it nearly impossible to describe exactly in scientific terms, the real state of decay. Des échantillons de papier en pure cellulose (Watman n°1) ont été plongés dans de l'encre gallique diluée d'après une certaine recette standard, puis traités avec une solution aqueuse de substances chimiques susceptibles d'inhiber la corrosion de l'encre. Il s'agit du phytate comme agent chélateur pour bloquer les ions de fer, du tréhalose comme antioxydant, et du bicarbonate de calcium comme agent de désacidification. Les critères retenus pour évaluer les résultats étaient le degré de polymérisation et le pH. Il s'est avéré que l'effet conjugué de l'agent chélateur et/ou de l'anti-oxydant était le plus efficace alors que la désacidification et l'antioxydant employés séparément n'ont pas donné de résultats satisfaisants. On constate en général que la grande variété de recettes d'encres galliques et que le degré encore plus fort de corrosion de l'encre utilisée dans les anciens manuscrits rend presque impossible une description exacte en termes scientifiques du degré réel de dégradation. Proben reinen Zellstoffpapiers (Watman no. 1) wurden in verdünnter Eisengallustinte einer „Standardrezeptur“ getränkt und dann mit mit wäßrigen Lösungen von Substanzen behandelt, denen eine Wirkung gegen Tintenfraß zugeschrieben wird: Phytat als Komplexbildner von Eisenionen, Trehalose als Oxidationshemmer und Calciumbicarbonat zum Neutralisieren. Die Kriterien zur Beurteilung von deren Wirksamkeit waren Polymerisationsgrad und pH. Es zeigte sich, daß die Kombination von Komplexbildner und/oder Oxidationshemmer am wirksamsten ist, während die Neutralisierung allein kein befriedigendes Ergebnis bietet. Insgesamt wird festgestellt, daß angesichts der großen Vielzahl von Tintenrezepturen und mehr noch der höchst unterschiedlich weit fortgeschrittenen Grade des Tintenfraßes, den man in historischen Dokumenten antrifft, eine exakte wissenschaftliche Beschreibung des entsprechenden Schadenszustandes nahezu unmöglich ist.
