Children's literature and television present older people in a generally unfavorable light. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether children demonstrated the same stereotypes of the elderly that are depicted in the media. The findings indicated that fourth, fifth and sixth graders generally stereotype the elderly. The children selected favorable adjectives to describe the photographs of the elderly. However, they indicated that they would prefer to associate with young rather than old adults. In general, boys ranked women higher than men, and girls ranked men higher than women. The findings of this investigation suggest many needs for additional research in the general area of stereotyping of the elderly.
