This book offers instructors and students of cartography a fresh approach to the study of modern thematic map design. An emphasis on the principles of design and a thorough system of references make this an ideal text for an undergraduate one-, or perhaps two-, semester course. The diversity and timeliness of the material ensure that this will be a valuable addition to the professional cartographers and graphic artists reference libraries as well. Several features typically lacking in current cartography texts are included here within the framework of an informal discussion that is easily transferable to the classroom. For example, an examination of geographical concepts-so important to the student cartographer and of ten ignored in texts-is given a thorough treatment in Chapters 5 (The Nature of Geographical Phenomena and the Selection of Thematic Map Symbols) and 6 (Preprocessing Geographical Data: Common Measures Useful in Thematic Mapping). Also included is a detailed discussion of the Census geography of both the United States and Canada, another topic most geographic cartography students will find integral to their course of study.
