Trajectories, encounters and disagreements in the aspiration to the UN: How are gender inequalities going? The following research starts from the current picture of unequal gender access and composition of the National University of Colombia at the undergraduate level, where males conform almost two-thirds of the institution. It is a concern that makes questioning how gender intervenes in the academic trajectories and experiences of aiming to access the university. In order to contribute to understanding the gender differential access, this document addresses the issue from a qualitative methodological perspective. In this vein, the present work analyzes the accounts of 30 applicants to the NationalUniversity. The research focuses on the previous academic performance in formal scholar environments, the subjective experiences that could emerge from the applicants' family environment, and the educative trajectories specifically related to the National University of Colombia's application process. It will be counted that there are distinctive experiences according to gender and on the circumstances of achieving admission or not to this educational institution.Within the families, the current gender mandates and the social position are crucial to the generation of academic expectations and strategies of the future women and men.Later on, in an educational landscape of high heterogeneities and inequalities, the school appears as a stage that configures those expectations and strategies. There the orders of gender recreate an inequitable sexual division and have a significant influence on future expectations and academic performance in some specific subjects. With this in mind, the admission exam preparation seems to be a strategic balance between acquired and inherited capitals and gender mandates, rather than a competition based on individual merits and disconnected to a social position.
