Concern for the impact of maps as part of development education, for adults as well as children appears to have been stimulated by the use of the 'world map known as the Peters projection. Since the mid 1970s this map has become increasingly used in graphical portrayal by many bodies involved in fund raising, education and lobbying on development issues. The projection has not only been used as the basis for thematic maps but has also taken on a more symbolic significance within 'development' circles. This paper examines the reasons for the success of the Peters projection in supplanting other world maps in the development literature. The results of a questionnaire survey of UK non-governmental organisations are examined and some suggestions made for future developments in cartographic presentation for development education.
