SUMMARY An approach of the general principles of the domestic architecture in Hispania is drawn up, analysing the more usual methods in the course of times, from the patio models to the houses associated to tabernae, and it is clearly shown the lack of a work that deals with the generic study of the house, according to the material findings and the functionality problems related to the exhaustive knowledge of pavings, paintings ans other elements. Out of a set of 365 houses, from the whole Hispania, apart from the taverns and indeterminate remains, only 102 domestic units persist. Only a little part of them could be mentioned, being complete and having documents related to decorative systems. Consequently, there are huge gaps in the knowledge of the insula systems at the towns, in their relation to the social changes, with reference to the houses of the not well-off classes, in the role of the architecture in the rustic villas in connection with the urban ones, in the processes of substitution of residential areas for production zones, in the knowledge of significant parts of the house (kitchens, latrines…) and other social values of it.
