The aim of this paper is to review the records management practices obtaining in Zambia from the colonial period to present times. It is being pointed out that during the pre colonial era, records management was crude in nature as it relied on the of mouth . The colonial masters inherited this kind of management but introduced the written word thus the management of records had to change. It is argued that during this colonial period, there was effective use of records and hence an effective management of records. However, just a.fter independence the system of records management was not effectively done. Furthermore the National Archives of Zambia, the institution mandated to manage public records is poorly funded and the legislation it is using is flawed. It is recommended that increasedfunding and the overhaul of the legislation to suit the current requirements of the country be done.
