Abstract

CONCEPTUALIZATION AND EVALUATION OF THE WISE PERSONALITY IN THE AGING The contemporary Gerontological research, since the conceptual review about the cognitive capacities and the thought in old age, has aimed to the positive aspects of the aging, like wisdom. This concept has recently been re-established like object of theoretical and empirical research, of growing interest in the human sciences, and particularly, in Gerontology. Within the framework of our present researching project called “Cognition and adaptation to the critical life events in the old age”, this paper displays an approach to scientiic conceptualization and psychological evaluation of wisdom as an aspect of the personality linking with the aging. Wisdom implies an integration of emotional, relexive, cognitive development of the personality. The objectives are: First, to review briely the main theoretical foundations and the conceptual operationalization of this concept, from the last decades, in particular the Ardelt s Multidimensional Wisdom Paradigm. Secondly, to display empirical data from a preliminary study aimed to the evaluation of the wisdom with the application of the Scale of Three-Dimensional Wisdom (3D-WS) in an elderly sample in this cultural context. The collected data show that the wisdom is a psychological competence that continuous being developed and/or being increased in old age.
