The topic of in the suggests two immediate challenges: how best to study culture change, and how to compare such change within or between populations. How are such comparisons best handled? Does the study of Asians in the Americas fall readily within the domain of traditional Latin American/Area Studies? Or should Asians in the Americas be studied as an integral part of Asian American Studies? Are diaspora studies the most appropriate framework for analysis, given that this approach prioritizes transnational and multinational linkages between populations overseas and their countries of origin-linkages that deeply impact the direction and rate of culture change for Asians overseas? I propose that since all of the above approaches have limitations, there are yet other alternatives that we should identify and explore.
