The present study aimed to test moderator and mediator variables of the association between the coach-athlete relationship and physical self-concept. A total number of 303 young male and female athletes (12-18 years) who participated at a high sport performance level completed the Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (CART-Q: direct and meta-perspectives) and the Elite Athlete Self Description Questionnaire (EASDQ). Regression analyses were conducted to test both moderation and mediation effects. Analyses revealed that athletes’ perceptions of their relationship with the coach was positively related to their physical self-concept particularly among athletes with established relationships. Analyses further revealed that athletes’ assumptions of similarity with their coach is an important mediator for both the newly developed relationship and the moderately developed relationship. These results extend our understanding of athletes’ physical self-concept within the relational context of the coach-athlete relationship.
