Our objective is mainly based on offering reflections on the human aging process through a dialogue with samba. We argue that discussing this genre of popular music, which is genuine and peculiar of Brazilian culture, favors a better understanding of the realities of old persons and contributes to the construction of knowledge on aging. On this research, we fundamentally take into account two main understandings which are more deeply analyzed throughout its chapters, being the first the fact that clinical psychology can be beneficiated from an old life approach built on dialogue with elements of Brazilian culture. Also present is the understanding that music, specifically samba, reveals potential to promote, even temporarily, moments of tranquility and entertainment even to those listeners experiencing a reality of hardship. This is an interdisciplinary research which seeks to: reflect on the importance of samba to the psychic and social lives in Brazilian culture; discuss the contribution of samba to a better comprehension of time in old age; focus on the relevance of humor on aging through Freudian theory and in dialogue with Brazilian carnival marchinhas; and, finally, debate the locus of elderly in contemporary society from the perspective of the carnival of Rio de Janeiro.
