Popular Culture and Library Education

Abstract

Approximately 100 catalogs from schools of library and information science and the ALISE Directory were used to gather the names of faculty teaching courses in popular culture or popular materials. These faculty were written to and asked for information about the courses they taught and for copies of syllabi. Thirteen faculty were identified who taught courses in these areas, ten submitted course information and syllabi. From their responses an overview of the teaching of popular culture in schools of library and information science was assembled. The article reports on the common components in the courses offered, and provides descriptions of three specific courses.
