This chapter explores how new media, specifically digital, are used in art therapy. Art therapists wrote about the therapeutic value of digital media; what was not therapeutic; the potential ethics issues involved with using digital media in art therapy practice; its social implications; and the training needed to address the complicated theoretical and ethical aspects of digital media for future art therapists. From these conceptual and research writings on digital media use, two principles have emerged: (1) digital media has limitations; however, with knowledge of those limitations, art therapists can mitigate them and use digital media ethically in practice; and (2) digital media is limitless; art therapists' continued exploration into specific digital media has revealed that we are more limited in our imagination than digital media is in its possibilities. The chapter also describes the projects of three pioneering art therapists working in digital media: Leonhardt, Austin, and Mosinski.
